Is Driving an Unregistered Vehicle a Crime?

Part of your responsibility when you own a car is to renew the registration each year. In addition to having current registration, make sure you display the stickers properly on your vehicle.

If you forget or simply ignore renewal, you could face legal repercussions.

Repercussions

You can get pulled over for having expired registration tags. If you cannot show proof of current registration, authorities may issue a fine. This fine increases the longer your vehicle goes unregistered. If past due by six months or more, authorities may impound your vehicle until you can satisfy the requirements. If you borrow someone’s car or rent a car, always check for proof of vehicle registration.

Even though a traffic infraction may not seem like a big deal, allowing your registration to expire could potentially result in criminal charges. Particularly if you go over six months without taking any action.

Renewal

The process of renewing registration does not take much time. According to MSN, the cost of new tags varies depending on the make and model of your vehicle, its age and how much it weighs. State laws may also require your vehicle to undergo and pass a safety and emissions test prior to receiving your new tags. Upon receiving your updated registration, immediately replace the paperwork in your vehicle. Make sure you sign the new copy of your registration and store it in an accessible place.

Connect with an Experienced Attorney to Defend Your Rights

If you have a traffic violation because of expired registration, you may want to try and fight the charges. Working with an attorney who knows about traffic laws may improve your chances of changing your outcome. Contact my office today to get started.
